Shinier & 1000× Harder

Act One: Shatterproof Safety Hearts

Jessie is a cheerful and distractible seventeen-year-old, with a heart of gold and that sense of justice which, TBH, lands you in detention like five times more often than it wins any battles. She likes her skateboard. She likes her friends. She likes going to the movies. She also likes sparkly rocks. She found a real cool one in an alley this morning, on the way to school.

Well, “real cool” is up for debate. It’s the locus of one of the Luciere — a relict consciousness from a distant star. When another Luciere takes control of a teacher and starts consuming the life force of Jessie’s classmates, the creature in her own crystal helps her fight, and grants her superhuman powers of transformation.

Introducing himself as “Cleista, the Wall,” the crystal tells her humanity now faces invasion and subjugation. The Festival — his former friends and colleagues, sent here on a mission of fellowship and discovery — have seized the minds and bodies of human hosts and begun remaking their surroundings to suit their memories, nightmares, and darkest desires. Something has gone horribly wrong with the people Cleista used to know, and without help, he’s powerless to stop them. But if the two of them can combine Cleista’s cunning and mystic powers with Jessie’s idealism and brutal tenacity (and her newfound ability to absorb the occult technology sealed in the Luciere’s crystal remnants), there might yet be hope.

Jessie is READIER THAN READY to step up and defend her friends, her family, the human race, and the destiny of Earth itself. But she’s up against millennia-old beings of diamond and pure will, and her chances do not look great. Also, Cleista seems to be hiding dark secrets of his own: has he really escaped the corruption that claimed his unhinged comrades? What could transform a handful of scientists and diplomats into a diabolical invasion force? And are the Festival as chaotic as they seem, or is their madness part of some deeper method, more ancient than even the Luciere themselves?
