After beating raving Barcier, gloomy Ceramar, and covetous Valcia, Jessie may finally be getting the hang of this magical heroine business. But her hard-won confidence is put to test after unfair test, as the reality-warping powers of the Cell and the Boundary threaten to rewrite physics, shred geography, and consume her city whole.
Meanwhile, Cleista tells her a disturbing, half-forgotten story: ages ago, his home planet Lucia was invaded by bizarre and capricious beings called the Rukala. They were incredibly advanced, with spacegoing vessels and unfamiliar crystal technology, but they seemed half-mad and disconnected from reality, treating lesser beings as playthings and possibly not even realizing the harm they were doing. The Lucian civilization of the time was nearly annihilated, but they finally overthrew the Rukala and used recovered technology to push-start a 100,000 year renaissance. And now, as he learns more about what’s become of the Festival, Cleista’s begun to wonder if maybe the Rukala are having the last laugh after all.
In the midst of all this, Jessie is trying to live some semblance of a normal life: keep tabs on her little brother, keep her grades out of the toilet, and maybe even go on a date or two. But everything goes on hold when a strange conspiracy seems to point toward Cleista’s old friend Nilcia — the one Luciere he thought would never betray their original mission.
